About Amy – Dog Trainer in Wakefield & West Yorkshire

I provide 1-2-1 dog training and behaviour support across Wakefield, Castleford, and surrounding areas of West Yorkshire.

I work with owners who are struggling with real-life challenges such as:

  • Puppy training and early development

  • Recall and focus around distractions

  • Loose lead walking

  • Adolescent behaviour issues

  • Reactivity and general behaviour problems

My approach is practical, calm, and based on modern learning theory. I focus on helping you understand your dog so that training becomes clearer and more effective in everyday life — not just during sessions.

My Dog Training Approach

I believe behaviour is communication, not disobedience.

Dogs are not stubborn, dominant, or “bad” — they are responding to their environment, emotions, and learning history.

Because of this, my training focuses on:

  • Understanding the cause of behaviour

  • Clear communication between dog and owner

  • Reward-based, ethical training methods

  • Preventing problems before they escalate

  • Building long-term confidence and reliability

The goal is not control — it is cooperation, understanding, and a better relationship between you and your dog.

Experience

I have spent over 2.5 years working closely with an IMDT-qualified dog trainer, gaining extensive hands-on experience across a wide range of real-world training environments.

During this time, I have been involved in:

  • Assisting in group dog training classes since December 2021

  • Running puppy training classes since July 2023

  • Delivering 1-2-1 training and behaviour sessions since February 2023

  • Supporting scent work, tracking, and mantrailing classes

  • Working with all breeds, ages, and temperaments in structured training environments (3–5 days per week)

  • Helping raise, socialise, and develop multiple litters of puppies (Cockapoos and Cocker Spaniels)

This experience has given me a strong understanding of how dogs learn in real-world environments, where behaviour is shaped by emotion, environment, and communication — not just training exercises.

My Training Philosophy

My training is built on one simple principle: when we change communication, we change behaviour.

I do not use outdated dominance-based methods or punishment-led training.

Instead, I focus on:

  • Reward-based learning

  • Clear, consistent communication

  • Understanding emotional triggers

  • Preventing issues before they develop

  • Creating lasting behaviour change in real-world environments

The goal is not obedience for the sake of control — it is a better, calmer relationship between you and your dog.
